HOUSE OF SKYLIGHT

Project Feature: Child participatory process for the filler slab design

The project is a composite structure consisting of conventional and alternative construction techniques.

In order to minimize the usage of manufactured materials and build more eco-friendly and energy-efficient roofing for a few selected spaces of the house, filler slab construction was adopted.

For the children’s bedroom, it was decided to involve the children (with the consent of the parents) to conceptualize the filler slab pattern. A much-simplified template was provided to the children (aged 3 and 6 years) to conceptually prepare a filler slab pattern. During the process, the children actively interacted with each other and tried to value each other’s viewpoints. Finally, the children incorporated a pattern that was a fine balance of the perspectives of both children. This pattern was refined further to facilitate the construction and was successfully implemented on-site.

This particular participatory process provided valuable insights into the user's perceptions and helped immensely in the process of co-creating and co-designing that brings a sense of belongingness to the end-users.
